Let the Game Begin

The world waits years for the Olympics to come around. With the Winter Olympics quickly approaching the excitement is rising to watch the U.S.A. compete for the top spot. Although it’s very easy to get caught up in all the Olympic hype it’s always important to remember how it all started and more importantly why it all started.

History

As it says in History.com: The first written records of the ancient Olympic Games date to 776 B.C., when a cook named Coroebus won the only event–a 192-meter footrace called the stade (the origin of the modern “stadium”)–to become the first Olympic champion. However, it is generally believed that the Games had been going on for many years by that time. The ancient Olympics were held every four years between August 6 and September 19 during a religious festival honoring Zeus. The Games were named for their location at Olympia. Their influence was so great that ancient historians began to measure time by the four-year increments in between Olympic Games, which were known as Olympiads.

It’s easy to say that the iconic Olympics have changed a bit since 776 B.C. Throughout the past thousands of years they have allowed huge changes. Now, with over 11,000 athletes competing from over 200 countries the Olympics has truly become a huge part of history and helps to encourage peaceful competition, and good sportsmanship between the countries and athletes. This comes to display through the Olympics iconic logo. The five colored rings, which is representing the continents of North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. The Olympic symbols meaning is: To express the activity of the Olympic Movement and represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games.
