Ease The Tension In 2019

Friday, December 14, 2018 - 9:45am

It’s hard to believe that a new year is almost here. A new year comes with many changes, conflicts, happiness, and experiences. So we ask you this question: What are your New Year’s resolutions? More importantly, what are your strategies to approach conflicts that have been lingering in your life? Whether these issues are happening at work or home, here are some approaches that will ease the tension in 2019.

Be Timely and Specific

It is critical to be timely about addressing a situation of conflict. If left unchecked, issues can escalate. If this is your resolution for 2019, make sure not to let frustration sit for too long before taking action.

Know What You’re Trying to Achieve

The number one key to conflict resolution is to understand what result each person involved wants to achieve, as well as what tradeoffs they are willing to make. Once you understand what the other party is willing to sacrifice, you can move forward with compromise.

Focus on The Facts

We know it’s hard to keep your emotions out of a problem, but it is important to keep your mind clear. When people judge, they get defensive, shut down, and/or go on the offense. Make sure to sit back and really look at the facts. If you’re looking to resolve any conflict in 2019, adding this goal to your New Year's list will truly make a difference.

Look at The Similarities

As Sheri Nasim from the Center for Executive Excellence says, “Remind those in conflict about what they have in common — such as shared values, your organization's higher purpose or creative risk-taking — to help them reset their collective compass and get back on the path of collaboration instead of conflict.” This statement could not be truer!

We at the Center for Dispute Settlement use all of these approaches when mediating and have had much success. We want to help you achieve your goals and resolutions. Let us help you change your 2019 for the better and connect with us today!
